In the news: Capturing sharing-economy data as Uber races ahead

Ready for a surge of sharing-economy data from business travelers.

Miriam MoscoviciBCD Travel is ready for a surge of sharing-economy data from business travelers, the company’s emerging technologies expert Miriam Moscovici explained in a recent Business Travel News story on the rise of Uber.

The article noted that second-quarter expense report data from Certify put Uber ahead of taxis for the first time ever. More than half of business travelers’ ground transportation receipts—55%—were from Uber, while just 43% came from traditional cabs.

“The reality is our clients are asking about [Uber],” Moscovici told BTN. For BCD clients that are not banning Uber outright, “it’s time to figure out how to weave it through their travel programs,” she said.

Capturing sharing-economy data is key not only to understanding trip spend, but also to meeting duty-of-care obligations and gaining business intelligence for supplier negotiations and smart, timely program adjustments. BCD can help clients capture and analyze data “from any point on the trip,” Moscovici said.

Earlier this year, BCD’s consulting arm Advito released, The Sharing Economy: Does It Have a Place in Your Managed Travel Program? The paper explores some of the benefits and risks of peer-to-peer sharing and collaboration within a managed travel program.
